Quick…what makes flamingos pink? Don’t know? Carotenoids!
The flamingos’ diets are rich in foods that are rich in carotenoids. This is what gives flamingos their bright pink color. Flamingos that live in places where they are not able to eat their natural diet typically become a much more pale shade of pink. Eventually a flamingo that doesn’t eat enough carotenoids may even become white!
Humans need carotenoids, too. We can carotenoids by eating papaya, mangoes, carrots, sweet potatoes, and red peppers.
Here is a yummy way to get your daily dose of carotenoids:
1 cup pineapple juice
1 cup vanilla yogurt
2 cups fresh papaya, mango, cantaloupe – any fruit in season works well
1/2 cup crushed ice
Place all the ingredients in a blender and whip well until smooth. Pour into glasses and garnish with fresh fruit. Makes 2
