Graduation Gifts

I am on an important hunt these days. What would you give a new high school graduate that has almost every gadget known to man? My son is graduating in a few days and is a techie at heart…so I really want to get him something that will both appeal and help him as he begins college this fall. I’m also looking to find the best buy that I possibly can, of course…because I’m just that way! Anyway…any suggestions? What does a techie who doesn’t really NEED anything want?

Computer Upgrading

I have been forced to do some computer upgrades lately and one thing that I have been shopping for is cheap computer memory. I confess that this is not my forte and before spending any money I have forced myself to learn as much as I can so that I don’t purchase anything that I will regret at some future point. Do you do this too? I hope I’m not the only one that truly agonizes over purchases before making them for fear of buyer’s remorse driving me crazy.

Tips for More Energy

Who doesn’t need more energy? Here are a few things I recommend:

  1. Eat berries! This is especially true of berries that are blue, red, or purple. Their color comes from anthocyanins, which is a powerful antioxidant that boosts energy.
  2. Wear bright happy colors and you’ll find that you get a bright happy attitude projected towards you. This will boost your own mood and energy levels.
  3. Try a lavender scent. Research has shown that a lavender scent increases people’s alertness.
  4. Don’t let yourself get dehydrated. Dehydration causes fatigue.
  5. Stay away from energy drinks. While they provide an instantaneous boost, they always result in a crash.
  6. Citrus scents stimulate alertness. Grapefruit essential oil is especially effective at producing an alert mood.
  7. Think positively. An optimistic outlook on life keeps your energy level up.
  8. Laugh! Laughter is great for what ails you. Laugh regularly to keep your mood up.
  9. Turn off the computer and go socialize with friends.

By the way…barcode scanners have nothing to do with this post, but nevertheless, are a necessary item for retailers. This is one item I have never really given much thought, but I happened to visit this site tonight and I was intrigued by the many different types of barcode scanners that exist!

Don’t Put Happiness on Hold

Stop putting happiness on hold. This is a pretty simple choice we make. We can either choose to be happy today and every day or we can live for some future date and postpone happiness for some indefinite time that we set our sights on. Make a choice to stop focusing on something in the future that we can have today. For example, if taking gay vacations has always been something you have thought about doing but never done, make a choice to stop putting things off and tick some of these things off of your list. Make a choice to start enjoying every day today!

Preparing a New Garden Spot

veggie-gardenYes…this is what I’ve been doing this week! We have decided to expand our garden about about two times what we had and so I have been very busy getting this ready. With this front-and-center on my mind, I thought I would share what I’ve been doing!

Garden bed preparation is very important to long-range success. Taking the time to do it right from the start can make a big difference.

Mark the new garden bed with a rope. If your new garden area doesn’t have grass get rid of any unwanted plants or weeds. Pull them or dig them – no chemicals! If there is grass, leave a narrow strip between the garden and the lawn as a separation. If you cultivate grass or weeds, pieces of grass or weeds may pop up again after planting the new garden.

Loosen the soil about a foot deep with a tiller or a pitchfork. Add about 2 inches of organic matter and work this in until it’s blended well with the soil.

Compost from a variety of decayed plant materials is the best type of organic matter. Composted municipal leaves, mushroom soil, cow or horse manure or bagged peat moss also work well. Organic matter adds nutrients and improves soil drainage. It also adds air space to encourage root growth.

Water the new garden bed and wait a week to see what weeds come up. Lightly cultivate again to get rid of these weeds.

Put down three inches of mulch over everything. You can either mulch first and then make planting holes or plant first and then mulch around the plants later. Place wet newspaper over the bare ground first. Top this with 2 inches of mulch.

Your result should be a neatly edged, slightly mounded garden bed that will become a beautiful sight to see. Bonus: No need for diet supplements when you are working as hard as I have been lately! Calorie-burning overtime!
