Why does cutting onions make us cry?
It’s the flavor and smell of onions that creates tears…but there are ways to reduce these tears when you chop onions.
- Refrigerate onions for 30 minutes before chopping them
- Use the sharpest knife you have for chopping onions
- Cut the root end of the onion off last (it has the highest levels of those tear-inducing ingredients)
- Wear glasses or sunglasses when you chop onions
- Breathe through your mouth instead of your nose
- Cut onions near a fan – the moving air will keep it away from your eyes
My poor oldest son…he is now an official victim of the “Freshman 15.” I never thought it would happen to him because he has fought to keep weight on his entire life and is built very much like his dad who is tall and lean. Well…of course there are worse things, but he is now slightly perturbed by his expanding waistline. I think I will just sit back and see what he does from this point. I do not expect any severe weight loss diet programs in his future…he’s more a “work-out and cut the sweets” type of guy. It should be interesting to see whether this new-found shape stays a permanent fixture of his physique or he goes back to his naturally lean build. Either way…he’s my baby and I love him!
Have you ever given serious thought to earning an online degree? I ran into an old friend the other day at the bank and as we were catching up, she mentioned that she was in the middle of an intense semester at school. As I asked questions, I quickly found out that she was earning her credits online. Intrigued, I asked more questions to find out exactly how she liked this approach. What I found out makes me think this may be something that would work for me as well.
Perhaps it is time for me to begin researching online universities. A good place to start would be Western Governors Online University. Not only is this an accredited college, but it is affordable and I can make a flexible schedule that will fit my life.
OK – so we’ve discussed some of the warning signs of being too busy and the problems this creates in one’s life. Ready to leave this lifestyle behind?
The first step is to admit that things have gotten out of control. You likely did this when you read the last post…right? Good!
You do have choices; however, and choosing to slow down and create a balance in your life is a reasonable choice and wise choice.
Spend a short time visualizing a time in your life when you were not overwhelmed with busyness. Think back to what it felt like. It felt good…right?
Now it’s time to plan how you are going to achieve this calm and serene feeling in your life. Redesign your life so it encompasses only the things you choose for it to include. Remove every single thing you don’t love or want. You can do this!
With happiness as your goal, you have the motivation to make these changes.
Begin to conquer the physical clutter around your spaces. Remove things that are unnecessary because these things lead to stress…whether you realize it or not. Once you make a dent in the physical clutter, start getting rid of the obligations that clutter your time. Delegate where you can and where you cannot delegate, you must ruthlessly eliminate the things you no longer wish to include in your life. Make sure your priorities are in order. Don’t forget about yourself as your whittle down your obligations. For example, if you have always wanted to take a crafting class, prioritize this in place of something you want to remove from your list of obligations. When you reassess your priorities, you suddenly have time for things like this.
OK – chew on those things for a bit…next time: making your home a sanctuary from the crazy world.
What’s the best all natural fat burner in your opinion? Mine is just old fashioned food moderation and exercise. Works every time. I don’t subscribe to risky chemicals and iffy concoctions designed to trick the body into giving up its fat stores. There is a better way, people…but it does involve work. Work to change your lifestyle and embrace healthy foods instead of synthetic and fake foods. Work to incorporate daily exercise and activity into your schedule. I know it isn’t easy…but nothing worthwhile usually is.
This must be what it is because after yesterday’s energetic post…today I am feeling rather flattened. No, I don’t need anything like depressiontreatment.net…quite the contrary…we have spring colds. UGH…the pain of it all! To have the weather outside so beautiful and the house getting whipped into shape and now half of us are feeling so crummy. Both my dear husband and I are feeling punk and two of the six kids are also down. Looks like our ailing is just in time for the weather to do what it often does in March. Yep…turning cold and blustery with snow moving in this weekend. If THAT stuff doesn’t go away soon I will need some depression treatment!
Have you rolled up your sleeves yet? We have in our family and we are in the midst of a huge overhaul. Similar to acne spot treatment for your face, you might say. In the past week, we have:
- Gutted our three-season porch, wiped down the walls, scrubbed the floor, given everything a good shake and reorganized the furniture in the room. It looks beautiful!
- Moved all the furniture and vacuumed in and under it
- Taken down the drapes and curtains and fluffed them in an air cycle in the dryer
- Cleaned out the pantry and given that a good overhaul
Still to do:
- Clean the garage
- Clean the bedrooms
I was quite surprised at a recent prenatal appointment to be told by my obstetrician that the jury was now out about whether prenatal vitamins are a necessary supplement during pregnancy. I have taken prenatal vitamins religiously throughout each pregnancy and never even considered the possibility that they were optional. Of course, folic acid is so important during early pregnancy so I just cannot imagine skipping or skimping on prenatal vitamins.
As a mom with two adult children who have navigated their ways through the years of high school prep testing, I consider myself at least somewhat knowledgeable about the ins and outs of SAT prep courses.
I was intrigued to stumble upon a website recently featuring gmat prep courses available online. Let’s face it…when presented with the option for studying at home, this just works for people of all ages…teenagers included.
I now have a sophomore son who will soon be entering into the realm of test prep and I will definitely be bookmarking this site.
Maybe I’ll be getting through this winter without an Outer Banks beach rentals vacation yet. Everywhere I look lately, there are signs of spring!
- Mud
- Grass
- Robins
- Longer days
- Asparagus (Juniors!)
- Spring cleaning
- Manure in the air
- Birds chirping
- Kids sleeping better
- Basketballs bouncing
- Washing winter grime from cars
- Putting away the boots
- Finding spring coats
- Crocuses
- MUD – did I say this one already?!?
