Create Your Own Unique Style

victorian-style-home-interior2Do you ever wander through the stores looking at the many decor items that you could add to your ? Do any of these items really *pull* you to purchase them? Do they feel like YOU? Or…do you get the feeling that these assorted items are generic and not really anything that truly represents YOU.

I was in Hobby Lobby this week…my first time ever in this store, believe it or not. I enjoyed the extensive array of everything crafty you could ever want or need under one roof (including fabric!). I was surprised to see the huge area of decor items–was not expecting a section of this type in a crafting store, I guess. I couldn’t help myself…I did wander through, looking at all of the different pretty things for placing on shelves, tables, walls, etc. Nothing really PULLED at me, though and I did not purchase anything more than the felt I had been searching for in the first place.

It got me to thinking, too…how do you create a that is uniquely yours?

  1. If you are starting from scratch, go ahead and wander through a decor store like that and purchase a few “starter pieces” to start building from.
  2. Choose a color or a theme and start building slowly. For example, if country red is your passion and you want to build a around this color, start with a shower curtain or towels and then accessorize slowly incorporating your color throughout everything.
  3. Choose one more complementary color and start adding this color in slowly to mix it up a little bit. Try using lighter and darker variations of your colors to mix it up even further.
  4. Branch out your decor shopping to the unusual. Don’t be afraid to hit the estate sales, flea markets and rummage sales. You can find amazing and unusual items hiding in places like this.
  5. Take your time. Don’t feel like you need to decorate your in a week…or a month…or even a year! Make it an ongoing process that continues to evolve as you find new things that really PULL you.
  6. Don’t buy anything that you do not truly LOVE.

This is the way to create your own unique style and create a respite that is truly YOU.

Stopping to Smell the Neighbors’ Cool Stuff

I took my three year old for a walk yesterday around our neighborhood. We live in an older area…the houses are all about 100 years old and there are no to speak of. This means that every is full of character…and this includes the outdoor decor as well. Have you been for a walk with a three year old lately? These walks are definitely “stop and smell the roses” types of walks.

We had to stop at almost every house…and this gave me plenty of time to notice some things that I might not normally notice. Things like…bird baths and garden accents and outdoor entertaining collections. I have discovered that my neighbors have great taste! The outdoor decor that I saw made me want to go shopping! There are some really attractive items available out there now to decorate the outdoor areas of a .

Even with a tough economy forcing many of us to tighten our belts and budgets, there’s no harm in window shopping for furniture online! In fact, this is something that I enjoy doing from time to time.

I find I always come away with a fresh idea or two to incorporate into my own without spending a cent. Recently I was wandering from site to site looking at various living room furniture styles that are popular now. There really are some lovely out there now.

Fairmont Designs is a nice place to wander around if you are so inclined!

Taste in Furnishings is Evolving

A comment I received the other day got me to thinking. It’s really quite interesting to take a critical look at one’s and see if you can determine how your tastes in furnishings have changed over the years.

I know that my tastes have definitely evolved as I have matured. I think this is a natural evolution due to the fact that most people’s furnishings get nicer as they have more money to spend. However, in examining my own tastes I can definitely see a subtle shift toward more modern furniture…and I really never thought this would happen!

When I surveyed the living rooms and bedrooms in my I could definitely see a more “grown up” taste coming through in our more recent additions to our .
