New Year’s Resolutions

So…one week into the New Year…how are your resolutions going? You did make at least one…didn’t you? I’m assuming you did and I’m also going to go out on a limb and assume it had something to do with getting healthier or looking more fit.

How are you going about accomplishing this? Have you been out shopping for treadmills yet? Or…are you hitting the DVD every day (Shred anyone?)?

You must have a plan to succeed. No plan is a plan to fail. Don’t make it fancy or complex…but do make some sort of a game plan to accomplish your goal. Even it if is simply blocking out 30 minutes some time every day to make your New Year’s resolution happen.

Let’s Hear it For Human Power!

Transportation, that is…

Yup…how is this for a diet pill that works. I’m talking about walking and biking to get us where we need to go. Instead of cars how hard would it be for us to start choosing human power to get us to at least some of our destinations? I am striving to use human power more this summer. When I have errands around town, I now put a backpack on my back and take off on my brand new bike. The bike was a way of motivating myself to use it more and it’s working. besides…I realized I hadn’t had a new bike for 18 years so I was due for a new one.

Anyway, the benefits are many. Calories burned, , save money on gas, reduce your carbon output….plus it will just plain make you feel good. I promise!

Find a Way to Exercise Daily

I know…that sounds harsh, doesn’t it? But I really can’t, in good conscience, recommend anything less. The only way to keep your body healthy is to keep it moving. And the best way to keep it moving is to have a daily that involves at least 20-30 minutes of . I have tried lots of different ways of getting this done, and years ago I finally admitted to myself that if I was really serious about committing to it was going to have to become a that would not get pushed aside or put off.

I’ve tried lots of different forms of cardio , and for me what works is an elliptical. We shopped around a lot and looked at a lot of ellipticals before we found the one we have, but that shopping was time well spent. I have used mine just about every day for the past 5 years.

Having equipment in the house works for me because I can easily fit my time in without having to worry about scheduling it for the most part. This really simplifies things and I get my done. There are other options, though. You could run or walk outside (in nice weather). There are lots of DVDs out there with good routines that might jump-start you and get you moving. If you’re a person who needs the structure of a gym and you think you’ll follow through with a membership then perhaps this is the way to go for you.

Bottom line…whatever gets it done…DO IT! A body that is moving is a body that will be strong and stay strong!
